Casual Poetry May 2026: Before You Go To Thailand…

Now you might ask yourself: how did we get here? And you might tell yourself: this is not the month of May! And you might tell yourself: this is not a normal poetry drop!

And you’d be right.

I wrote almost nothing new in May. I did do some rewrites of some poems, some variations. But nothing that felt like it merited an exclusive Poetry Drop on the Patreon followed by a Poetry Drop on the blog. I have felt like this system was not serving anyone well. Neither Patreon nor blog nor I, as the author, nor you, as the reader.

So we’re changing it up.

From now on, I will be releasing poems daily on the Patreon (or as best as I can——bear with me, it’s festival season) & then collecting the best for a drop at the start of each month. I’m debating how I will title the next one, June or July, but that’s a decision for a later date. You can read more about the decision from my weekly ramble-update here.

For now, enjoy what poems I could scrap together.

  1. “Overthinking” is a poem that came from the writer’s block I suffered during May; it centers on my departure anxiety where I seem to over pack for everywhere I go. I still do this, but I have come to an internal peace that I am a writer who prefers pen & paper over phones. The lesson: have an artist’s go-bag for whenever the outside world calls.
  2. This variation of “Possession” was written for the temple burn at SOAK. Unfortunately climate change has precluded a ritual burn for the past two years but this year the organizers found a way around this issue by providing water dissoluble paper. I decided to write a poem inspired from the 2025 edition of SOAK as a way of burning the past away. I have probably written & rewritten “Possession” over fifty times at this point & will continue to do so until it is finally published. This particular edition was limited by space & my typewriter that took a spill during the festival (it has been repaired since). In the end, I watched it get washed down from my hammock position before returning to my camp for one last night of festival debauchery.
  3. “Before You Go To Thailand” was written for my friend Cheshire before he left for, well, you get it. He’s out there teaching kids how to dance with poi & generally living his best life (though it took a little encouragement). I placed this poem within a journal for him to write about his experiences in Thailand. I am conflicted on writing another version of this or if it is perfect as is. Who am I kidding, these things are never perfect, but it was perfect enough for purpose.
  4. “Experience Is” was written for one of my favorite people on this Earth, my grandmother. If there has ever been a person that taught what it means to love unconditionally, to ply my trade & to let it feed my people, it’s her. As May is the month of Mother’s Day, it would have felt weird not to share this little handwritten piece.

Hello there! I appreciate you taking the time to read this Patreon Exclusive. As you know, I’m working on growing the Casual Ramble but I need your help. If you like my writing, I would love it if you gave it a like and a share. These actions go a long way to increase reach on WordPress and help more people see what’s happening in this little corner of the internet. Thank you regardless if you’ve read this far, you’re the champ of this blog!

About The Casual Rambler

An insane man moonlighting as a respectable member of society from Portland, Oregon. A rock ‘n’ roller since his mother first spun The Police’s “Roxanne,” Ben is a lover of all things independent music. Once upon a time, a friend told him to write about music. So he started doing that under the title of a Willie Bobo cover by Santana. Now he just casually rambles about whatever crosses his mind.
